I would suspect that Samuel was related to James as they both served in Company E. This is all the information found in their records.

33rd Arkansas Infantry Rgt.

Col. H. L. Grinsted, LtCols. H. W. McMillan, Thomas D. Thomson,
Majs. W. L. Crenshaw, William T. Steele.

The regiment was organized in the summer of 1862 with men from Polk,
Montgomery, Sevier, and Pike counties. It was assigned to R. G.
Shaver's, Tappan's brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. It skirmished
in Arkansas and fought at Jenkins' Ferry where it lost 92 men.

Later the regiment disbanded.

Cox, 23 years old, 2nd Corporal, Captain Williams' Company E, Grinsted's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry*, enlisted June 24, 1862 at Arkadelphia for 2 years, belonged to 12th Arkansas Vols., Company A, recorded as a Sergeant on the muster roll dated February 29, 1864, no further records as this was the last muster roll which survived to be recorded

Cox, 28 years old, 4th Sergeant, Captain William's Company E, Grinsted's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry*, enlisted June 24, 1862 at Arkadelphia for 2 years, belonged to 12th Arkansas Vols., Company A, last recorded present on the companies muster rolls August 31, 1863, appears on a list as serving with other Arkansas Infantrymen in the cavalry service without authority. listed dated January 27, 1864, at Camp Bragg, no further records
