It is widely published and one of my favorite Civil War photographs. I'm satisfied it is one of the three 1st Alabama Volunteer companies garrisoning Fort Barrancas in May, 1861. The Tallapoosa Rifles was one of them. Unless someone finds a letter mentioning being photographed there I suppose we will never know which company for sure. I have a recently discovered photograph of Capt James D. Meadows (it is in the book) decked out in his AVC field officers uniform, shako and all. He is wearing Captain's rank straps. I would like to think that officer in the Barrancas image is him, but that individual is clearly bearded, and unless Meadows could grow a heavy beard in a month or less it may be someone else.
