I wonder if there was widespread use of mile signposts, but in any case the distance a soldier could march was fairly precise, measured at 70 yards a minute for a regular pace, or nearly 2.4 miles/hour, and I recall 86 yards a minute for quick step and 109 yards for double quick step.
