Nancy --

After checking several possibilities, I've decided that there is no military record for this man. He lived until 1914 and was an Alabama resident, so in 1907 he should be recorded among other Confederate veterans living in Cleburne County AL. The sheriff made inquiry for all living veterans, visited and interviewed each one, and forwarded completed forms to Montgomery. He receied payment for this census based on the number of forms returned, so incentive existed to locate all living veterans. Also, any Confederate veteran without means of support could have applied to the State of Alabama for a pension. I don't see this man's name listed with the state archives in either category.

A check of possible service files in the name Jesse Brown points to other men by this name. The search included Georgia units since he lived not far over the Alabama line. I thought he would have joined one of the mounted companies raised in Calhoun County during 1863-1864, but found nothing. Could be that this man did something to aid the Confederate war effort, but wasn't directly involved in the military. Do you have an obituary that mentions specifics about his war service?
