Re: Tallapoosa Rifles - 150 years ago today...

Greg --

The name of the organization was Alabama Volunteer Corps.

AVC commissions to the "Tallapoosa Rifles" were issued after the company was mustered into Confederate service. Governor A. B. Moore issued them on April 13, 1861, to rank from April 5, 1861. Commissions were issued to Capt. Meadows, 1st Lieut. Orren B. Lockett and 2nd Lieut. Alfred Johnson. By rough count the "Tallapoosa Rifles" became the 133rd of 204 AVC companies to receive commissions from Governor Moore.

The "Tallapoosa Rifles" appears to have based on an earlier AVC organization, the "Andrew Jackson Guards" of Tallapoosa County. The Alabama state legislature chartered the "Andrew Jackson Guards" on Feb. 21, 1860. Under new elections members elected attorney Benjamin B. McCraw of Dadeville their captain on Jan. 2, 1861. Because AVC companies could organize with a minumum of forty-four officers and men, members wishing to enter Confederate service had to secure other volunteers to bring their numbers up to the number required by Confederate law. Sometimes two AVC companies merged to secure enough members to qualify and entered service under a new name. That may be what happened here.
