The records tell us more than they say in black and white, and we try to provide that information here. Evidently Chaney was paroled about as soon as he was picked up by Federal soldiers in Kentucky. Rather than returning to his command, he seems to have found other things to do until picked up by Confederate conscript officers in Alabama a year later.
