The Confederate government did not issue medals. Images, letters and other personal items would have been passed along to family members. Do you know any of this soldier's descendants? If so, have you asked about his wartime papers and personal items?

JSW was thought to have been killed during the fighting on the lower slopes of Lookout Mountain, Nov. 24, 1863. However, he had been captured and sent to prison camp at Rock Island IL. This was a new prison camp that developed quite a reputation. A book you should be able to locate about the prison is titled, Rebels at Rock Island: The Story of a Civil War Prison, by Benton McAdams.
