Re: john squire waller 40th alabama infantry

I add this additional information:

J S. Waller, Private, Company D, 40th Alabama Infantry, apparently was wounded or became disengaged from his command at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tenn. on November 24, 1863. Subsequently, he was captured and wound up at the Rock Island, Illinois Prison Camp. He was released for exchange May 3, 1863 and sent to New Orleans via Camp Douglas, Illinois Prison Camp. At New Orleans he was released to go home.

His company was not aware of his capture, only noting he was missing. He was carried on the next two bi-monthly muster rolls as "Absent, missing since Battle of Lookout Mountain," later he was recorded on a list of those killed at Lookout Mountain.

This information is found in his compiled service records which consist of 17 cards. These may be procurred through the service noted in the Red enclosed box above.

Cards in his file:

5 & 6 - Recorded on his company's November & December, 1863 and January & February, 1864 muster rolls as "Absent, Missing since Battle of/on Lookout Mountain _______??________** ** I believe it reads Marion, Co.

7 - Arrived Rock Island, Illinois Prison Camp December 5, 1863

8 - Transferred to New Orleans for exchange May 3, 1865

15 - Transferred from Camp Douglas, Illinois Prison Camp May 4, 1865 to New Orleans

16 - Captured at Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 24, 1863, transferred to the Commissioner for Exchange, May 23, 1865, from New Orleans, La.

17 - His name appears on a list of casualties, in Moore's Brigade in the engagement on Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Nov.24, 1863, under remarks he is recorded "Killed"

..................

THE FORTIETH ALABAMA INFANTRY.

The Fortieth Alabama was organized at Mobile in May, 1862.

It went to Vicksburg by way of Columbus, Miss., and was brigaded
with the Thirty-seventh and Forty-second under General Moore; was
in Featherstone's command in the Steele's bayou expedition, March
16 to 22, 1863; was transferred to Bragg's army, and appears to
have served in detachment as sharpshooters for the greater part
of the time of its service.

At Vicksburg it suffered severely, and a large portion was
captured. Being paroled, it joined its command in Tennessee in
time to take part in the battle of Chickamauga, September 19th
and 20th, where it lost heavily, next fighting at Lookout
Mountain, November 24th, and at Missionary Ridge, November 25th.
