Re: Occupation of Bridgeport, Alabama

Gen. Anderson reported on July 29th of the Federal cavalry that "At about 10 o’clock they retired beyond the hill, out of view. The officer commanding our pickets on the island thinks they are still near at hand, but it is probable they have returned to Stevenson". The first Federal report that I find sent from Bridgeport was dated August 12, and was sent by Gen. Lytle to Gen. Sheridan in Stevenson. (Vol 30 Pt 3 pg 14). Can't find anything else about Bridgeport between those two dates.

Gen. Baird, 1st Division, XIV corps, reported that on "the 2d of September, when we moved from our camp on Crow Creek to cross the Tennessee River... and concentrated my force near Bridgeport, but was unable, from the great accumulation of materiel, troops, and trains, as well as the frequent breaking of the bridge, to pass the river until the 4th." (Vol 30 Pt 1 pg 269)
