Hillary A. Herbert Led the 8th Alabama Regiment through much of the war. He was elected to Congress after Reconstruction ended and remained in office until 1893. He left behind a "war diary" of the 8th Alabama Regiment which you may find useful.

Aaron Creech seems to have given different ages for himself over time. In 1850 his age was reported as 29; in 1860 it was 35. His age on the 39th Alabama roll for Company "B" was stated as 45. Acording to family tree data, he was born in June 1818.

Creech evidently received a discharge from service with the 39th Alabama Regiment. Perhaps the conscript officer responsible for Barbour County believed him to be within the prevailing conscript age of 18 to 40. At any rate, during the late summer of 1862 he was taken to Camp Watts and enrolled on Sept. 5, 1862. Aaron Creech was soon assigned to the 8th Alabama Regiment and sent to Virginia shortly afterwards. Records show him present for the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

About the same time an ancestor from Coffee County was conscripted, sent to Camp Watts and assigned to the 8th Alabama. He too was captured on Cemetery Ridge, July 2, 1863. Your ancestor was released before the war ended and went home on furlough in October 1864. Mine remained in prison until the end of the war.
