Re: Capt. D.B. Brown's Co., Talladega County Reser

Even though you located Clark Sewell's record among other Confederate service files, he and other members of Alabama County Reserves were not Confederate soldiers. Daniel B. Brown served briefly as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. "G", 25th Alabama Regiment, resigning his commission on March 26, 1862. In 1863 he became a sub-enrolling officer for Talladega County. After county militia companies organized under the state law of August 1863, Brown was elected captain of one of these companies. This would have been in the summer or fall of 1864.

It's somewhat interesting to note that no officers appear in any of the County Reserve files that you located, at least not for Talladega County. Captain Brown signed his parole at Talladega on May 27, 1865. It's found in Unfiled Papers and Slips, the miscellaneous service records.

These were not regular military companies where members wore uniforms or carried a battleflag and equipment. They did not go into camp and spent the greater part of time at home with their families. Based on letters written to state authorities, frequently they had no arms or ammunition.

Here are a few messages I have posted over the past two years about 1st and 2nd Class County Militia, 1st Class Militia also known as County Reserves.

Please feel free to ask other questions. I do find 1st and 2nd Class Militia interesting.
