Leonard,
Family legend has it that Josiah was home on leave from the AL 28th Inf Regt, because of sickness or wound. I haven't been able to verify this. The 28th told him it was time to return and he wanted time to bring in his crops, they said no and he slipped off to Camp Davis MS and joined the 1st.
There is a book by Don Umphrey "Southerners in Blue" based on his ancestors writings that gives a good account of the Union sympathizers in N AL.
