Pvt. Burwell (Burrill?) Quimby, Co. A, 40th Ala. Inf. Regt. -- born 1825 in Alabama -- died 07 November 1862 at Camp Tomey (Toomey)(Alabama?). Widow: Henriette Martin Quimby.
As to Jonas Quimby, most of Companies A, D, and I were detached from the regiment shortly before the siege of Vicksburg began and sent on an expedition up the Sunflower River. Therefore, most of these soldiers of this company were not present with the regiment for the siege and subsequent surrender of Vicksburg. I do not have any information to indicate if he was present with his company at that time or not. Some of the men from all three of these companies were left at Vicksburg because of ill health, detailed on duty assignments, etc. His name does not appear on any documents that I have found listing those died at or are buried in Vicksburg, but that certainly does not mean that he did not die and was buried there. If he had left earlier with his company, he could have been left most anywhere sick in Mississippi along the route of his company during their detachment and died. I am sorry that I cannot as of now offer you any better information or speculation than that at this time.
As to Burwell Quimby dieing at Camp Toomey (Tomey), I do not know where that was, but if information is correct, it should be on the west side of Mobile or somewhere in the Mobile area. The regiment was stationed at that time at Camp Marshall Austill which was somewhere near Dog River Factory. Not sure, but I've been told this is near what is now Springhill.
