Jim& Alan- Everyone appreciates your mutual goal of factual information over person opinion. History is just what it is by definition and those who do not appreciate reality become "story-tellers". Don is correct about Alabama having different settlers and each of the primary groups had different goals and values; that said, I refer a publication of Sarah Woolfolk Wiggins (U of A Press), titled The Scalawag in Alabama Politics, 1865-1881. Her work lists her references, names names, and quotes participants of that era. Her work also gives pre-war history and sentiment. There are other books, But I found this one useful.
