Mr. Phillips,
I was looking at the Alabama Civil War Service Database on the State Archives website and found the reference to an R. W. Burks being in Stokes' Co. of the 1st Alabama Cavalry and I assume this is the record you are referring too. It originated with a claim filed by his wife, "J.A.C. Burke, Widow, Perryville, Ala; No des. list; Claim filed Jul 20 63." Although there is a modern day Perryville in Tallapoosa County, there was not one to my knowledge during that period. I suspect she was living in Perry County at the time that claim was filed. He would have died sometime prior to July 20, 1863. I don't have him on my roster of that company, but that doesn't mean he was not in it by any means. I believe their company papers may have been destroyed a couple of times during the war as their camps were overrun by Federal cavalry.
