Interestingly enough, ten years ago Jim Martin posted the same story about Gaines Mill. People took turns trying to determine which battle was really being described since the 48th Alabama didn't arrive in Virginia in time to participate in the battle of June 27, 1862. The first battle for the 48th Alabama Regiment was the Battle of Cedar Run, Va., August 11, 1862.

There really should be a monument for the 48th Alabama on this battlefield.
