Here is some additional information. I have not yet completed my research on this individual, but this is what I currently have recorded.

John G. W. McKancie enlisted September 20, 1861, Private, Company A, age 28, Chambers County. Present on muster roll dated September 20, 1861 at Camp Johnston, Alabama. (Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) Online)

McKemie, McAmey, or McKancie is not listed in Company A. (History of the Fourteenth Regiment Alabama Volunteers, by Marshall B. Hurst) (Hurst joined the Regiment in Virginia and apparently did not know of McKemie.)

John G. W. McKemie, Private, Company A enlisted on July 26, 1861. Cards for McCamey and McKennie are also in this file. John G. W. McAmey is reported to have died on November 24, 1861. J. G. W. McKennie Company A appears on a register of claims of deceased officers and soldiers from Alabama that was filed on March 24, 1862. (M311 Roll 235)

A document for this man appears in the service record for A. H. McCamie. (M311 Roll 235)

J. G. W. McKemie. Died at Huntsville, Ala., 16th of November, 1861. (Source: Opelika Post, Opelika, Alabama, December 13, 1901, submitted by Stephen Hodge, former Captain of Company A, 14th Regiment Alabama Volunteer Infantry)

In early November the 14th Alabama Regiment began moving from Camp Bradford, near Huntsville, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia. The Regiment left a large number of men behind at Huntsville who were sick with measles and other camp diseases. McKemie appears to have been left behind at Camp Bradford, due to his illness, and died there after the Regiment departed for Virginia. (Research done by David White)

Alan is correct. The 14th Alabama was not issued weapons until they arrived at Dumfries, Virginia in mid November 1861.
