According to various accounts it was very cold and the roads were terribly muddy as the troops tried to move about. Most wounded and dead were left lying freezing on the battlefield during the night. I have one first person account from someone walking the battlefield afterward and from some of his descriptions one can draw a very clear picture of the battlefield and some of its' dead.
