Re: 13th Ala travel Montgomery to Virginia

For most early war volunteers in camp during the year 1861, life consisted of boredom, homesickness, and physical maladies which could last for many weeks. For diversions aside from gambling and writing letters, men found ways to slip past camp pickets at night. In the countryside they sought out live poultry, hard liquor and female companions. The excitement of being away from the constraints of camp were well worth the loss of sleep and any punishments that might ensue. Also, at this time many Southern farmers were pleased to entertain Confederate soldiers and share a late supper with them.
