Re: BURIAL OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS

Richard Blake, my great-great uncle, died of measles near Corinth, MS on 5 July 1862 following the Battle of Shiloh. He served in Co. F 22nd Alabama and is buried in the cemetery at Okalona, MS and has a marked grave which I have visited. After the War, his father Thomas Blake sent his oldest son John Blake to MS to investigate the possibility of moving Richard's body back to Alabama to be buried in Blake's Family Cemetery here in Cleburne County, AL. Letters still in possession of family members verify details. With regret, the decision was made to leave Richard Blake buried in MS. Another son, William Blake who also served in Co. F 22nd Alabama, was killed 20 September 1863 in the Battle of Chickamauga, GA. His body was brought back home to Alabama for burial in Blake's Family Cemetery. Another son, Thomas A. Blake also served in Co. F 22nd Alabama during the last months of the War, although he was only a very young boy. I have never been able to find official records to verify Thomas A. Blake's military service. Letters to the family from his commanding officer Jim Martin are the only proof of service located. He died at home on furlough, and he too is buried at Blake's Family Cemetery.
