Phil --

Based on information found in the officer's parole, he may have claimed to have been Colonel of the 20th Alabama Cavalry. There are several paroles issued at Talladega for members of Capt. John H. Lee's Company, 20th Alabama Cavalry. Davis received his parole at Guntersville, Ala., but gives his residence as Shelby County, Ky. W. W. Lowe, Lieut. Col. of the 13th Alabama Cavalry, another supposed Alabama command, also surrendered in this part of the state. Both may have part of the force assembled at Munford, Ala., by Brig. Gen. Benjamin J. Hill, formerly Colonel of the 35th Tennessee Regt. and provost marshal of the Army of Tennessee.

A record exists for Capt. John F. Davis, formerly Capt. and ACS, 6th Kentucky Regt. He's the only Confederate officer located under this name.
