Perhaps Jim will forgive me for yet another off topic discourse.

Weather forecast 300 or more days every year is sunny and clear.

A year ago I'd never heard of Sun City West or any of the neighboring communities. It's one of several communities designed and built by Del Webb.

Rome is the city of the Seven Hills; SCW is the city of the seven golf courses. It seems like a coastal Florida community with no humidity, mosquitoes or sand. Compared to Alabama, costs are surprisingly low. Most of the year electricity bills are $60 a month or less, groceries averaging 20-30% less than in Alabama. Fruit comes from friends and neighbors, who insist that you take more than you need. Sometimes people leave bags of grapefruit or lemons or oranges along the street.

Another surprise is snow in Arizona. In the northern third of the state snow might be in the forecast for July 4th, and nighttime temperatures can be near freezing or below much of the year.

Since most of Arizona is flat, with little effort you can ride a bicycle for miles. However, the landscape around Phoenix is surrounded by steep, rocky mountains that are generally dark red in color. From our doorstep during January we could see snow on some peaks.

Sidewalks and streetlights are found throughout the community. No telephone poles are seen anywhere, garabage cans are below ground level, and powerlines run only along the main streets through town. The rest is underground, including watering systems.

Most of the traffic on the streets consists of quail, doves and rabbits. When you do see people on the road, As many get about in golf carts as in cars. I never saw so many flowering plants, shrubs and trees this side of Bellingrath Gardens. Being here consists of one surprise after another, which BTW is the name of the oldest community nearby (Surprise AZ).

This is a retirement community, but unlike our neighbors, we are NOT retired. Residents are supposed to be fifty-five or older to live here. For that reason there's no school tax, no schools and you hardly ever meet anyone under fifty. It's quiet, clean and peaceful.

A word about temperatures. From this point forward daytime temperatures will reach anywhere from 90 to 115 degrees or a little more. Because humidity is so low, most people set the thermostat at eighty. Until two weeks ago, we never needed ours, and left windows open at night until yesterday. If you run the A/C much less than that, it feels cold. No, I don't need to see a doctor; my blood isn't thin - it's just Arizona. If your house is newer (and everything here looks as if it was just built), the ceilings are ten feet or better, roofs are well-insulated tile, so you don't really feel the heat without going for a walk in the afternoon.

Earlier this month Joe Hall Moore III, grandson of a Confederate veteran, died in our community at age 92. His ancestor Samuel D. Moore was living in Georgetown near Washington DC when the war began. His parents immediately moved to Richmond, and he soon joined Parker's Virginia Battery at age seventeen. As we heard during the funeral, Joe Hall Moore, given commendations for his service to the people of South Korea, Taiwan and the United States, never stopped telling his children and grandchildren about his Confederate ancestor. We're pleased to have known him, even for a short time.

JHM's memorial at church mentioned Parker's "Boy" Battery in the third line.
