The one card in his file which lists date of death as April 6 was based on a regimental record which may have been based on official correspondence or the recollection of one of his comrades.

The other cards record his death as April 8, these are all based on hospital records which should be more accurate.

One card records his presence at the Episcopal Church Hospital in Williamsburg. Three others show him in the hospital in Petersburg, two at the South Carolina Hospital there.

Should you wish to research further, the National Archives, in Record Group 109, holds records for both these hospitals. The records for the Episcopal Church is rather extensive. However, the South Carolina Hospital in Petersburg may or may not list cause of patient death. Records contain "Statistical reports of sick and wounded men, 1863-64, with lists of discharged patients and deceased patients; and a register of surgical cases, 1863-64."

Pertinent cards in his file:

Admitted Episcopal Church Hospital, Wiliamsburg, Va April 5, 1863 with Bronchitis, died April 8.

Appears on a report of sick and wounded in South Carolina Hospital, Petersburg, Va., April, 1863. date of death April 8, 1863, bronchitis

Appears on a register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital, or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Virginia March 21,1863, transferred to Chimborazo Div. No. 4 (Richmond)

Admitted March 20/21,1863, Debilits March 21, 1863, returned to duty March 23

Appears on a register of Confederate Soldiers killed in battle or died of wounds or disease, died of Fever, April 6, 1863 at Petersburg,

died April 8, 1863 S. C. Hospital, Bronchitis
