Re: Black CS Company in Montgomery?

Alan: I don't think the diary covers 1865, though, at the time I was looking at it, I was more interested in early 1861, as I was looking for details of the Violet(t) Guards' (Co. K) violet uniforms. I think the diary mainly covers 1862, though there is a lot of info on what supplies were issued to individual soldiers, i.e., jackets, shoes, etc. Another problem is that the writing is very tiny and hard for me to read. The diary has over 100 pages, but is, itself, very small (maybe 3 inches x 5 inches). I think that transcribing this little jewel would be a great project for someone with better eyes (and more time) than me! And, yeah, I've seen a few other officers who were given permission to raise Black companies. Interestingly, the same archive has an enrollment book from a LA Parish that is supposed to have the names of Free Persons of Color who enlisted in the LA Militia! Wish I'd had time to view that book! [Note: I'm NOT one of those folks who think that Blacks -- free or slave -- joined the CS war effort in droves. But some did join, and their service (and motivations) should be remembered.]-- Jim Huffman, Violet Guards, Co. K, 6th LA Inf.
