Re: books, memoirs on confederate far right

Ron --

Before picking up books about individual units, have a copy close by of Harry W. Pfanz, Gettysburg: The Second Day. This is the first of Pfanz's excellent books about the battle. A former superintendant at Gettysburg, Pfanz understands the battlefield completely and demonstrates a mastery of his subject. The book includes numerous maps showing location of different regiments and batteries at different stages of the fighting. This study is strictly focused on the three divisions under Longstreet's command and their attacks on Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Peach Orchard/Wheat Field, and Cemetery Ridge. Pfanz covers details thoroughly without spending too much time on any one espisode.

To reinforce my earlier impressions of Pfanz, I read his chapter on Little Round Top again last night. No question about it. If I had to list a series of narratives on your chosen subject, Pfanz would be at the top with a note which reads, Start Here.
