The 48th actually came into action between the base of LR Top and Devil's Den, where they had their hands full with the 40th New York. Let's not forget that the Confederates also went at a full run for most of a mile and a half to reduce the impact of artillery and sharpshooters, crossing rough terrain (creek, mud, underbrush, ditches, fences, etc.) until they reached an elevation strewn with large boulders, all of which broke up their line considerably and thus reduced the impact of their assault. The 4th, 5th Texas and 48th Alabama were rather mixed together which reduced officers' control over the men. Here the colors were the only thing keeping the men in something of a coherent fighting force. Still, they nearly overcame Vincent's brigade, not only against the 20th Maine but they were also pushing back the other end of the line held by the 16th Michigan until the arrival of Weed's brigade secured that flank.
