The father of John and James Pinckard was named William...and he was born in GA, Coweta County I believe. Is it too far-fetched to imagine that he did not immediately enlist due to his age yet when the need became dire, he enlisted in his native state (perhaps there on business of some sort?). West Point being so close to the border between GA and Alabama, perhaps William was there getting supplies, or news about his parents/siblings he'd left in Georgia when he relocated to Chambers County?. He is listed as having died in 1864 so it's possible (tho I don't know how likely) that he enlisted into his now-home state of Alabama regiments, the 14th Inanftry being one of the units that had Chambers County men. I'm not versed in the enlistment or recruitment practices of the time period at ALL so this may be ludicrous...but thought I'd mention it in case it addressed some mysteries surrounding if the William that died at Spotsylvania in May 1864 could be the father of the boys who enlisted in 1861. I welcome anyone to correct me if I'm wrong, or to enlighten me as to the practices of the day?...I'd rather get the information correct than believe my wild suppositions! Respectfully, cgd
