Re: 5th Georgia in Tennessee or Alabama?

George and Alan,

Thanks for the responses. I am aware that no muster rolls exist for this unit from August 1862 until early 1864. This is just the time "my" Volney enlisted, but it appears, unless some journal, diary or newspaper article pops up, I will never know when he joined the 5th Georgia.

I do know that his family lived just east of Stevenson, AL and that in post-war years, his youngest son stated that he remembered as a child riding his father's horse to the place where he joined the "Southern army" and then returned alone on the horse to his home. The son could not have been over seven years old at the time, so I presume the 5th Georgia must have been in Stevenson, not Bridgeport, as the distance from Bridgeport would seem to far distant for such a young child to navigate successfully. Maybe, if I could find some reference and dates when the "5th" was in Stevenson, I might be able to deduce the likely date when he would have enlisted.

Another matter that enters into this is the older son Monroe Willoughby, a member of company I of the 17th Tennessee Infantry. Monroe, from his short service record, apparently was not well an seems to have suffered from some of the camp diseases so prevalent early in the war. His does not appear on the rolls of the 17th Tennessee Infantry after about October of 1862. He is not shown as AWOL, deserter or anything else. The record just ends.

I presume he died about this time and I've always wondered if the death of Monroe might have led to Volney's enlistment to honor his son's memory or perhaps to gain some degree of revenge.

Thanks again for the help.

Jim
