David- according to the 1860 US Census, Alabama, Chambers, Northern Division, page 123 (Milltown Post Office) the members of this Pinckard family are:
Wm T age 44
Elizabeth age 29
John P age 18
James H age 16
Wm H age 13
Mary E age 13
Albert W age 7
Augustus age 5
Margaret age 1

Given that the William H who is listed as killed in action May 12, 1864 has the same middle initial as the brother [not father], and his age at year of enlistment in 1864 would have been 17-18 years old (depending on his birthday relevant to when the census information was taken), it's more likely that he WAS the brother of John and James and not the father as I had once thought. Your original supposition was correct. Maybe it's not too far out on a limb that since he had a sister also age 13 that he was a twin (I'm trying not to "guess" about information anymore but this one seems more probable than my earlier thought!)

[I know that Susan M Clifton was William T's first wife, and the mother of John and James most certainly--perhaps she died in childbirth having twins? Elizabeth is his second wife and more likely the mother of Albert, Augustus and Margaret.]

Do you know if William is still buried near Spotsylvania or if he was one of the ones whose body was re-interred in his home state?

From Milltown, AL (location of family during the 1860 census) it's just under 30 miles to West Point (closer if they lived more towards Five Points which is nearer to the cemetery where James is buried than Milltown); from Milltown to Auburn where the brothers enlisted it's closer to 35 miles distance. Is it possible that William went to the closer enlistment station in Georgia but requested to be in his brothers' Alabama regiment?

As to the Southern Historical Society Papers, Volume XV, 1887 the H Pinckard must have been James Henry-- the word "Veteron" is engraved on his granite gravemarker at Mount Pisgah Baptist Cemetery and his birth and death years make it far more probable that he was a War Between the States veteran than any other conflict.. right? =/
