Dear Carol,

I was browsing the Internet last night, and I happened to run across your posted message on the Civil War site. I cannot answer your specific question, but I thought that I'd touch base with you because I, too, have PINCKARD ancestors, and I'm almost positive that your ancestor and mine were brothers.

My great-great grandfather was also named JAMES HENRY PINCKARD (born 1822, died 1898). He is buried here in Pike County, Alabama. He was my grandmother's grandfather, and she remembered him well. James Henry Pinckard married his first cousin, Helen (Pinckard) Pinckard (born 1829, died 1857), and they first moved to Arkansas, but in 1857 they came back to Alabama and settled here in Brundidge, Ala. where they both are buried.

James Henry Pinckard was a son of JAMES PINCKARD (born 1799), who died in a hunting accident in Georgia in 1827. The following year, his widow, Mariah (Walker) Pinckard (born 1801), re-married to Rev. John Wood in Coweta County, Ga., and they subsequently moved here to Alabama.

Actually, I have Pinckard ancestry twice because James Henry's uncle, THOMAS C. PINCKARD (born 1796), was also his father-in-law. Another brother of James and Thomas C. Pinckard was PEYTON PINCKARD (born 1794, died 1850), who moved to Chambers County, Ala. where he died. I am almost positive that Peyton Pinckard was the father of your William T. Pinckard.

The Pinckard family came to Georgia from Virginia in the 1780's. The father of James, Peyton, and Thomas C. Pinckard was JAMES PINCKARD, Sr., who died ca. 1835 in Monroe County, Georgia. I have a copy of his Last Will & Testament. James Pinckard was born ca. 1765 and was married in Pittsylvania County, Va. in 1786 to Judith Smith, a daughter of Peyton Smith. James Pinckard, Sr. was, of course, my 4th great grandfather. I looked for his grave some years ago when I was in Monroe County, Ga., but I never found it. Of course, he may be buried in an un-marked grave.

Hope I may have helped you a bit!

John P. Johnston (age 66)
