Thanks for the info and links. I have read the material and it goes a long way in explaining why he enlisted in Montgomery which seemed such a long way from his home. For whatever reason, his brother did not enlist with him, but joined Co G, 3rd Cav in Tennessee.

I did know that William applied for an artificial limb, but don't know if he ever got one. Imagine my surprise when I visited the Civil War Medical Museum in Frederick, Maryland and saw an actual artificial limb from that time in history. It had a spring loaded thumb and looked very realistic considering the technology of that time. Shirley
