If it was that long ago, it could've been in response to ADAH Director Thomas McAdory Owen, who asked for pictures of Alabama veterans, as well as any other wartime documents or personal recollections. This would've been between 1900 and 1910. You can ask the ADAH to search the correspondence file for the 44th Alabama Regiment. It includes all of Director Owen's letters to different veterans and their widows, plus other post-war inquires about the command.
