Don't see any evidence of service, but there's no service record for many of Roddey's cavalrymen. Roddey and his officers recruited in Lawrence County; Russell's original battalion of seven companies came from Marshall, Madison, Jackson and DeKalb Counties, the northeast corner of Alabama. Alabama pension applications contain questions about the soldier's command, such as the name of his commanding officer. Are these questions not answered? The form should also include statements by two witnesses for service of the applicant. Who witnessed the widow's application?

Many of Roddey's veterans served in commands other than the 4th Alabama Cavalry. Also, many companies originally assigned to the 4th Alabama Cavalry became part of other commands.
