Alabama soldiers sent to Mobile after Appomattox

Has anyone specific knowledge of paroled Alabama soldiers of the ANV being sent to Mobile via ship immediately after the surrender at Appomattox? I've been shown an interesting military pass from the Federal Provost Marshall at Mobile dated May 3, 1865 giving permission for a member of Co. H, 3rd Alabama "a paroled member of the Army of Northern Virginia" to travel at Federal government expense by steamer up the Alabama River. As it is pre printed and hand numbered 256 I assume there were alot of other parolees too. It is still in the hands of the family and he was a conscript from Chambers County. His name is Andrew J. Peters. His CSR also stated he was paroled at Appomattox. Where would he have been put on a ship for the trip to Mobile? at City Point, Va.? His CSR is mum on this. I can see the Federal government wanting to get the Alabama veterans of the ANV out of Virginia and home as quickly as possible, but have always clung to the belief that soldiers from this part of central Alabama mostly walked back after Appomattox. [Or rode trains were where there still were any.]
