The 34th Alabama as part of Manigault's Brigade was part of the Confederate breakthrough of the Union line. The location is east of town on DeKalb Ave near the Inman Part MARTA Station. Manigault was deployed north of the railroad and broke the Union line at a deep cut where the railroad ran through the Union entrenchments. After breaking through, the brigade wheeled to the left and struck the flank of General Lightburn's Brigade and all 4 federal regiments broke and fled to the rear.

Sherman then ordered 5 batteries of artillery to open and Manigault later wrote "The shells tore through the lines or exploded in the faces of the men with unerring regularity."
