A widow of a Confederate veteran could qualify for a pension, but a widow who remarried could not.

Anna and John C Powers appear on the 1880 census for Dale County. His age is reported as age 54; that of Anna is 38. If you are certain that your ancestor didn't survive the war, John C Powers isn't the right man.

The 1850 census of Coosa County includes Adeline and John M Powers. I don't see them reported in a later census. Evidently they had a daughter named Cora who

The 1860 census for Pike County doesn't list anyone named Power or Powers.

Can you identify the year, county, page or household# where your ancestor lived in 1860? There are usually too many candidates in a state to use name only, so this is always the right place to start a search. To avoid sheer guessing, we need that information.
