Re: The Alabama Cavalry Battalion of Fort Heiman,

Alan,
The parole documents of Lts William P. Wren and R.M. Clark are amazing sources for locating Hubbard's Company and who is in command. In his 14 Feb 1862 report from Paris, TN, LtCol John H. Miller asked Maj Gen Polk, " . . . General, what am I to do with my men this terrible weather? Half supplied with tents and cooking utensils, we cannot remain in this condition. I beg your attention to their wants. Pagett's, Hubbard's, and Houston's broken companies have no tents at all or supplies of any kind, having lost them at Fort Heiman." (OR Vol. 7, Pt. 1, pg. 416.) The signature lines of Wren's and Clark's documents, "Ala. R.(angers) 1st Miss Batt" are a strong indication that LtCol Miller still had Hubbard's and probably Houston's companies with him at Union City, TN on 22 Mar 1862. William P. Wren was second in line to command Hubbard's Company of Alabama Rangers. Since Wren did not claim to be a captain, David C. Hubbard was probably still the company commander.

I wonder if David C. Hubbard's illiness was physical, mental or both. His wife, Sarah Ann (Sallie) Wiley Hubbard, and mother of his only son, died on 14 Jan 1862 in College Hill, Lafayette County, MS of typhoid fever.
