I've never heard of Cora Powers or any connection to KY. My Adeline's maiden name was prob. Wilkes or Wilkerson. She was born in GA on Oct 17, 1829 and died Oct 7, 1911 [tombstone]. She is buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Henderson, near Troy, Pike Co, AL, beside her granddaughter Lella Jordan. When her husband John Powers never returned after the Civil War, she presumed he was dead but never knew for sure what had happened to him. I'm not sure when she married a Mr. Acrey, who tanned leather. My grandmother called her "Granny Acrey." I visited Hopewell cemetery in the 1980's and interviewed my grandmother, Effie Estelle [Shaw] Rozier before she died. She lived to age 94 and had an exceptional memory.

Not sure when Adeline married John Powers [prob. 1848 or 1849] or where they married or if his middle initial really was M. Need to find their marriage license. I'm guessing that John Powers was born about 1824 since his age was recorded as 26 on the 1850 census [if that is MY John Powers]. Sure wish I could get my hands on the copy I have. I'm getting this info from a narrative I typed several years ago. But my documentation is in storage and I failed to make detailed notes about where I found this info. I think I'm basing it on the 1850 AL census. Can't remember what county, but Coosa sounds right.

My John and Adeline had two children: a son Jimmy and a daughter Mary Elizabeth "Mollie." Not sure which was older. Mary was born on Dec 3, 1849 in Chambers Co, AL [near Coosa Co]. She married Henry Coleman [H.C.] Jordan who was born in Muscogee Co, GA on Jan 21, 1884 and died May 18, 1903 [buried at Hopewell]. I think he served in Co F, South Al Regiment CSA, but I've not had time to find documentation for him. My grandmother told me that her g'mother "Granny Jordan" received a pension of $30 a month. Henry and Mary married on Nov 24, 1870 in Pike Co, AL according to my g'mother but I do not have documentation. Mary died Oct 1948 at age 99 years, 10 months, in Pensacola, FL, while visiting a daughter, and is buried in Dothan, Houston Co, beside her son Ezra.

When Mary's brother Jimmy was grown, he moved to Wise Co, TX, near Fort Worth. According to my g'mother, he had made a lot of money and raised a big family in Texas, but I've not been able to locate him or any of his descendents. But I digress.

After your previous post, I tried to see what I could find online. At www.fold3.com, I found a listing for John M. Powers, GA 47th infantry, Private, Troup Co, Ga, just across the state line from Chambers Co, AL where Mary Elizabeth Powers was born. But could not find any other info on him.

I also found several Powers [one was a John] listed in 1827 GA Land Lottery. Perhaps one of these was John's father.

Last year, I had posted about a John Powers who enlisted in AL but served with Pembleton's Cavalry in GA. I was curious about why an Alabama soldier would serve in the GA Cavalry. Now it looks like my John Powers may have had both AL and GA connections. I had dismissed him because someone had posted that those soldiers were disabled or had bad health, guarded the local area and never went to battle (if my memory serves me correctly).
