Company E, 49th Alabama Infantry

I am digging for additional information. If you have any additional information (photos, writings, letters, etc.) on Co. E please let me know.

My 5th great-grandfather was Francis M. Thaxton (b. 1839 - d. 1863) of Co. E. 49th Alabama Infantry. He was from Guntersville, AL and he was married to Mary (Cryar). When he left for the war, he left behind a 1 year old daughter, Alice. I have five letters written from him during the war, and one from Dr. R. N. Anderson, "Surgeon in Charge" notifying the family of his death. He enlisted January 2, 1862 in Guntersville, AL and died on June 11th, 1863 in the General Hospital "Governor's Mansion" in Jackson, MS. I have this information and much more in his letters. He mentions several people in his letters:Louis Brazier, Mr. "Weiden", Capt. M. Gilbreath, and Capt. "Rolns"(?).

After much research it was determined that he was buried along with dozens of confederate soldiers in unmarked graves within Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson, MS. This cemetery is only a couple of blocks from the Governor's Mansion where it is reported that he died. In April 2010, with the help of Jefferson Davis Camp 635, we were finally able to place a much deserved and long overdue marker for my grandfather.

Thanks for reading.
