At the time of Fort Donelson, the 26th Alabama Regiment did not exist. The companies sent to Fort Donelson had been in camp at Tuscumbia for some time with Smith's 3rd Alabama Battalion. The remainder of the battalion was dispatched to Richmond VA, where it reorganized as the 26th Alabama Regt.
