John M. Powers, Private, Company A (Mitchell's Volunteer Guards), 47th Regiment Georgia Infantry,* enlisted April 15, 1862 at Camp Davis by Col. Williams for 3 years or the war, admitted to CSA General Military Hospital, Wilmington, N. C. n.d., Pneumonia, returned to duty February 9, 1863,** patient at Breckinridge's Division Hospital, Marion, Miss. August 31, 1863, captured at Chattanooga, Tennessee November 26, at Missionary Ridge November 25, arrived at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois prison camp December 9, 1863, enlisted in the U. S. Navy at Rock Island and transferred to Naval rendezvous at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Ill., January 25, 1864, no further records

* This company was also known as Company A, 11th Battalion, Georgia Infantry

** Believe the notation Post office Savannah, Ga. makes reference to his residence

His file contains a note from the Adjutant General, War Department, with the Georgia Commissioner of Pensions, dated 12/3/21

Note: This would indicate, either he or his widow filed for a
Confederate pension from the state of Georgia
