We have two muster rolls that show my great-grandfather, Elijah N. Taylor, enlisted as a private in Co. E., 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment on 13 September 1862 at Mobile. The second muster roll covered the pay period Nov. and Dec. 1862. We believe he died of disease while in the CSA, probably in 1863. In 2003, Illene Thompson published a book, "The Seventeenth Alabama Infantry: A Regimental History and Roster". The index is said to have over 2,800 names.
