Camp Buckner Talladega Conscript Camp

I am a bit puzzled. I received a copy of my ggrandfather's military records for service in the 12h Alabama Volunteers.

I noted he was at the Camp of Instruction in Talladega, where he received payment in January 19, 1864. Other records show he was credited with service from December 24th 1863 until February 1864, with the 12th Alabama. He also is shown enlisting at Coffee County in 1864, and also Talladega in 1864. To complicate things even more, while he was in Howard Grove Hospital in 1864 he is shown as never been paid, and again is credited with service from December 24, 1863 until February 1864.

Is it possible that he was in the 12th as early as December 24, 1863? If so, why was he paid from Camp Buckner in January 19, 1864?
If you could offer some possible explanations to this puzzle...I would appreciate you letting me know.
My greatgrandfather was William Marshall Funderburg from St. Clair County. He was later captured at Monocacy and died in Elmira 1864, where is buried.
