Denham's service file shows that when the Confederates left on July 4th, he remained in a field hospital at Gettysburg. Along with other sick and wounded Confederates, Denham was sent to New York on the afternoon of July 21st. Medical notes show that he had a ball in his right leg. Denham was transported by ship from New York to City Point VA and released on exchange, Sept 16, 1863. He was sent home on furlough, Sept 24, 1863, and never returned to his command.
