Thanks, I found him on a pension application as being in the 10th Cavalry. I have also found his grave and the headstone has Company B 10th Alabama Cavalry. I also found an old Walker County Periodical with his picture at a Civil War Veterans Convention in the early 1900,s. He died at age 95 in 1915. In his pension application, he states that he participated in the Battle of Bryce's Crossroads and the Battle of Newnan in Georgia. He joined the army in 1863 and served until 1865. General Roddy was his commander and I know he also commanded the 4th Alabama Cavalry. It is possible units or soldiers could have interchanged within the two groups. It is also possible he was chasing deserters and harassing unionists. Company B is given credit for killing Thomas Pinckney Curtis, the Probate Judge of Winston County. It would sound better on the application to say he was involved in Mississippi and Georgia than shooting at farmers. I have found his deposition along with that of his father before the Southern Claims Commission who obtained compensation for a horse and bacon taken buy soldiers from General Wilson's command in March of 1865. This time would fit with when he was in Walker County and claimed he was captured and taken to Montgomery. I have read as many of the claims from Northwest Alabama as possible and found several references to Captain Whatley, the company commander, threatening to hang farmers for harboring deserters. I have tried to research the military campaigns that he mentions to see which units were involved. If there are other places I might go for this research I would love to hear all ideas.

Thanks
