Re: 3rd Alabama regiment casualites in 1865

3rd Alabama had about 180 - 190 men in Petersburg in late March '65. There were at least 7 casualties in the Ft Stedman assault (March 25); On Apr 2 their picket line was infiltrated and about 30 taken prisoner; Capt Phelan of Co F, KIA 4-2-65 and Lt Wheeler, mortally wounded on that date at Petersburg; 3rd Alabama was in the rear guard; estimate about 120 evacuated Petersburg on that date; At least 16 were lost at Amelia C.H. and Harper's Farm (Sgt "Preach" Wiggins KIA there) on Apr 6; The roster at Appomattox has 102 officers and men, 35 of which were original volunteers.

Wheeler died of his wounds 4-15-65, last known combat casualty; another man was killed on his journey home shortly after Appomattox.
