I appreciate your detailed follow-up. The lineage I'm researching is that of his daughter Josephine "Phenie" D. Powell Melton, wife of Evander M. Melton. My purpose is to complete documentation for UDC Crosses of Military Service for bestowal on the youngest son of Josephine and Evander. To be eligible, an intended recipient must be a descendant of a Confederate soldier. Dempsey M. Powell's Confederate service in the 17th Alabama will meet that requirement.
