Alabama Surgeons at Gettysburg
Every regiment at Gettysburg usually had one Surgeon and one Assistant Surgeon. Typically the Surgeon would work at a large field hospital well behind the lines, while the Assistant Surgeon would be located at a temporary field hospital much closer to the front. Over the years I have compiled the following list from the Alabama regiments but would welcome additional information and confirmation of their presence at Gettysburg.
8th Regiment: Surgeon Robert T. Royster-present?; Assistant Surgeon Daniel Parker-present?
9th Regiment: Surgeon Henry A. Minor; Dr. W. F. Richardson. Minor was left in charge of the wounded from Anderson's division at Butt's schoolhouse on the Fairfield Road; he worked at Camp Letterman for 2-3 months, then was imprisoned at Fort McHenry for two months prior to his release. Richardson also worked at Camp Letterman.
