Scott --

Since the pension and the census offer little about this man, can I assume you have something more about this man? I see Elizabeth Sanders on the 1880 census as a widow living in Mobile County. Cannot find anything earlier. Can you confirm that this man actually lived in Alabama in 1860? The 1880 census shows a son who was born in Mississippi about 1866.

The rank mentioned of Colonel is wrong, and I'd guess the widow was mistaken about the cavalry part, too. Would like to at least confirm that Sanders was an Alabama resident during the war or earlier.

An attorney named Alexander Wallace Stark served as a lieutenant of Co "I", 15th Alabama Regiment. He resigned after a year's service due to health issues. In the second half of 1864 A W Stark recruited a company of Junior Reserves from Pike and Butler Counties. Several members are listed in the ADAH records, most born about 1847. Col Oates of the 15th Alabama mentioned that A W Stark died of consumption not long after the war. I'm not sure Capt A W Stark has any connection to Meredith Sanders.

The nearest thing to a cavalry company by this name would be Capt Stokes and his company of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Stokes been misread as 'Stark' at least once in ADAH records.
