"Carrying the Flag, The Story of Private Charles Whilden, the Confederacy's Most Unlikely Hero," Gordon C. Rhea, Basic Books, 2004

I suspect you are aware of this book, but post in case not.

Gordon lists some nine men who served as flag bearers for the 1st South Carolina Infantry. Five lost during the summer of 1862.
